- <p> DIED. WILMA RUDOLPH, 54, Olympic track star; of cancer; in Nashville,
- Tennessee. Seriously ill as a child, Rudolph endured girlhood
- bouts of scarlet fever and polio that left doctors fearing she
- would lose the use of her legs. Not only did she overcome her
- illnesses, she also became a world-class athlete, one who would
- command the international stage at the 1960 Rome Olympics as
- the first American woman to win three gold medals in track and
- field.
