  16. Tennessee. Seriously ill as a child, Rudolph endured girlhood
  17. bouts of scarlet fever and polio that left doctors fearing she
  18. would lose the use of her legs. Not only did she overcome her
  19. illnesses, she also became a world-class athlete, one who would
  20. command the international stage at the 1960 Rome Olympics as
  21. the first American woman to win three gold medals in track and
  22. field.
